About the Role:

Global News is currently seeking a well rounded web developer to join their newsroom digital product team. The job is front-end focused, but you will also need to be comfortable coding in WordPress with PHP.

Be present when local, national and international news breaks, contributing to innovative storytelling and helping the team solve real-world journalistic challenges. The role will directly report to the Team Lead of News & Radio, Digital Technology.

What you’ll do here:

  • Work in our agile development team to build products and features that reach new audiences and improve our user experience on,, and our network of radio websites.

  • Create and enhance custom WordPress plugins and themes that hundreds of journalists across Canada rely on daily to produce award winning journalism.

  • Work with journalists and designers to craft new multi-media storytelling templates and data-driven interactive features.

  • Work with Amazon Alexa, Progressive Web Apps, and other emerging tech to help bring our content to new platforms.

  • Be part of a diverse and forward-thinking agile scrum team, committed to an inclusive work environment that fosters professional growth.

About You:

  • 5+ years of professional software development experience with a track record of building responsive web experiences that look and feel smooth across browsers and devices.

  • Post-secondary degree in Computer Science, Design, Multimedia or demonstrated industry hands-on experience.

  • Fluent knowledge of modern front-end technologies, primarily JavaScript ES6, HTML, and CSS/SCSS, as well as webpack, npm, JSON, and Git version control.

  • Proficiency with PHP and WordPress development, with an understanding of WordPress hooks and filters, coding standards, and security concerns.

  • Solid understanding of website architecture that integrates multiple data sources, and experience working with REST APIs.

  • Experience working on a scrum / agile development team.

  • Working knowledge of web accessibility and performance best practices.

  • Strong organizational skills. You may be working on multiple projects at once.

  • Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.

Any of the following is an asset:

  • Interest in the product-side of digital news media.

  • Experience or interest in journalism and / or visual storytelling.

  • Experience or interest in data-analysis and web scraping.

  • Knowledge of front-end visualization tools like D3.js.

  • Knowledge of Python, Pandas, or Jupyter Notebooks.

  • Experience developing on the WordPress VIP Go platform.

  • Experience with Google AMP, Amazon Alexa, or Apple News.

  • Experience with Ad Integration (DFP, GPT) and/or Metrics (Adobe Analytics, Permutive).
