Medical Officer of Health

Lead a public health organization in South West Ontario committed to working with the community to promote, protect, and improve health and well-being for all and enable all individuals to increase control over, and to improve, their health.

Windsor-Essex County Health Unit (WECHU) currently has an opportunity for an executive leadership role as its Medical Officer of Health (MOH).  The MOH will provide critical public health leadership for a community of nearly 400,000 residents and lead a workforce of more than 200 public health professionals, within a strong and experienced executive leadership team. The MOH reports to an autonomous Board of Health which has a proud history of over 100 years of public health service in Ontario. In collaboration with the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), the MOH is accountable to the Board of Health for achieving the mandate of the health unit to protect and promote the health of the population and to prevent disease.

The MOH is a vital member of the local health system, working intently with local hospitals, schools, health agencies, social services etc., to improve health and well-being of the community served. The MOH must also work effectively with fellow MOHs across the region and the province, the Chief Medical Officer of Health (CMOH) and the Ministry of Health to safeguard and enhance the public health system.  In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, public communications, testing, and community vaccination efforts have been effectively managed, and critical public health responsibilities are being maintained.

The Board is looking for an outstanding collaborative leader who understands the Ontario Public Health legislative framework and can provide leadership within the political context of public health. A public health leader who can, in collaboration with the CEO, maintain a positive public image for the health unit and positive and effective working relations with partner agencies, and be the spokesperson for the health unit on matters of public health significance and/or local emergency situations. A values-driven individual who will embrace equity, diversity, and inclusion in all aspects of the health unit’s activities and in building healthier communities across Windsor-Essex County and the Township of Pelee.

The successful applicant must be licensed to practice medicine by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario and hold a fellowship in Public Health and Preventive Medicine from The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or a certificate, diploma, or degree from a university in Canada that is granted after not less than one academic year of full-time post graduate studies or its equivalent in public health. The successful applicant will also have a proven track record of working in an organizational leadership team and collaboratively with other health disciplines and community-based service providers. Additional experience in financial management, strategic planning and business and risk management would be an asset.
